5 Push-Up Mistakes That Kill Your Chest Gains (And How to Fix Them)

The push-up is one of the best chest exercises you can do anywhere, but small form errors can rob you of results and even cause shoulder pain. Here are the five mistakes we see most often, and the quick fix for each.

Common push-up mistakes

  • Sagging hips – squeeze your glutes and brace your core so your body stays in one straight line.

  • Flared elbows – keep elbows at about 45° to your body to protect your shoulders.

  • Half reps – lower your chest until it is a fist's height from the floor, then press all the way up.

  • Dropping the head – keep your neck neutral and look slightly ahead of your hands.

  • Holding your breath – breathe in on the way down and out as you push up.

Fix these today and you will feel your chest working harder with fewer reps. Quality beats quantity every time.
