The Truth About Increasing Height

Your height is mostly decided by your genes. Bones grow in length only while the growth plates are open, which is usually until the late teens. After that, no exercise can make your bones longer.

What exercise, good posture, enough sleep and good nutrition can do is help teenagers reach their full natural height, and help adults stand taller by improving posture and spine flexibility. Slouching can make you look shorter than you really are.

10 Height Exercises From the Video

  • Cycling

  • Hanging toe to bar

  • Touch toe stretch

  • Sport jumps

  • Skipping rope

  • Cobra stretch

  • Pilates roll over

  • Pilates spine stretch

  • Pull-ups

  • Swimming

How These Exercises Help

Hanging exercises and pull-ups stretch and decompress your spine and build back strength, which supports a taller, straighter posture. Stretches like the cobra stretch, toe touch, Pilates roll over and spine stretch improve flexibility in your back and hamstrings. Jumping, skipping, cycling and swimming keep you active, strengthen your legs and support healthy bone development in growing children and teenagers.

Simple Height Workout Routine

As a general guide, do this 4 to 5 days a week:

  • Warm up: 5 minutes of cycling or skipping

  • Hanging (toe to bar or dead hang): 3 sets of 20 to 30 seconds

  • Cobra stretch: 3 times, hold 20 seconds

  • Touch toe stretch: 3 times, hold 20 seconds

  • Sport jumps: 3 sets of 10 jumps

  • Pilates roll over and spine stretch: 2 sets of 8 slow reps

  • Pull-ups or assisted pull-ups: 3 sets of as many as you can with good form

Swimming 2 to 3 times a week is also a great full body activity for growing teens.

Other Tips to Grow Taller Naturally

  • Sleep 8 to 10 hours. Growth hormone is mostly released during deep sleep.

  • Eat enough protein, calcium and vitamin D from foods like milk, curd, paneer, eggs, dal, green vegetables and sunlight.

  • Practise good posture: stand straight, keep your shoulders back and avoid slouching over your phone.

  • Stay active every day with sports, running or cycling.

  • Avoid smoking and junk food, which do not support healthy growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can exercise really increase height?

Exercise cannot change your genetic height or lengthen bones after your growth plates close. For children and teenagers, regular exercise, good sleep and nutrition help you reach your full natural height. For adults, stretching and strength exercises improve posture so you stand taller.

Until what age can height increase?

Most girls stop growing around 15 to 17 years and most boys around 17 to 19 years, when the growth plates close. This varies from person to person.

Does hanging increase height?

Hanging decompresses the spine and improves posture, which can make you stand a little taller, but it does not make your bones longer in adults.

Are these exercises safe for kids and teens?

Yes, these are simple exercises like cycling, skipping, stretching and swimming. Start slowly, use correct form, and ask a doctor if you have any injury or medical condition.
